Grand Finale of Music ka Maha Muqabla

Aired on March 20th on Star Plus an Indian Channel

I am an avid music buff. I love to listen and croon music of all genres - classical to the popular Bollywood songs. Amongst the innumerable fare churned by Bollywood every month or rather every day, songs with meaningful lyrics, lovely melody and great playback singing appeal to me. So if you want to say am choosy well yes I am. I accept! So naturally I was drawn to this newest musical reality show of Star Plus - Music ka Maha Muqable where Music directors like Shankar Mahadevan, Himesh Reshammiya and excellent singers like Shreya Ghoshal and Shaan were the participants. I choose not to bore you with elaborating on the format of the game.

On March 20th we watched the grand finale of this show where Shankar Mahadevan and Shaan were contesting for the championship. It was evident that Shaan had a stronger team comprising of capable singers and hence were demonstrating a beautiful team work. Shankar's team consisted of Rahul Vaidya, the only singer of some calibre. So it was Shankar all the way as he was leading his team as a one-man army much like Sachin!

While watching the show I had a bitter argument with my husband. He dislikes Shankar as he is of the opinion that he sings to the masses by rounding off with a Ganpati bhajan. So according to him rather than displaying crooning skills Shankar gets away with all the applauses at live concerts by playing to the audience.

The core point o four argument was: My husband believes that one should not play to the sentiments of the audience. It rids of fairness. But I believe a singer/any performer's first duty is to enthrall the masses. He/she should know the pulse of the masses. A clear idea of the likes/dislikes of the public is essential for any showbiz personality. If you dont know the way to capture their senses and completely mesmerise them, then there's no point.

We all feel at home when someone shows his/her acceptance of our values, beliefs and ethics. Dont we? Dont we a appreciate a Firang when he/she dresses, talk or thinks like us? We do. We are overwhelmed when we find a stranger accepting our traditions as he/she tries to be at one with us. We are thrilled. The same is true for performers. They have to think and act like the masses to be at one and a hit with the masses.

These were my thoughts. What do you think? Pls leave your opinions and I will be glad to respond.

O bhaiyya All is Well...

A Review

Hello Everyone,

Wish you a very Happy New Year!! Am willingly removing the word'belated', because we are still in the 1st week of the new year, so I guess we are still allowed to wish like wise. As promised a year ago ( ;P), am back with a brand new post. And guess what, this time it's a review on the 'oh-so-popular' film 3 Idiots
Am sure you all must have watched it by now. So I wont start with a description of the movie in details. What I would like to highlight here is the basic storyline of the movie. It's not news that the story is loosely based on the very famous Chetan Bhagat book, Five Point Someone, which talks about the life in engineering and management colleges. 3 Idiots also seems similar to Dickens' novel Hard Times, which also mocks the faulty education system.
Of course the 3 Idiots are Aamir Khan, Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, with Aamir playing the ring leader's role. And they all play their parts to a T. Concepts introduced in this film are quite common, but the catch is the way these concepts are packaged and presented to us. Like we all have heard our parents, teachers telling us or learned men preaching us to chase excellence and not success. Hirani states the same concept likewise: ' Kamyabi ke peeche mat bhaag, kabiliyat ke peeche bhaag, kamyabi to jhak maar ke aayegi'
Indeed such dialogues are eye-openers and you feel rocked. Though Aamir steals the show with his sensitivity, sensible actions and generosity and witty but true sayings, Boman Irani strikes you with his stellar perfromance. When Hirani indiacted to Madhavan through Aamir, to chase his dreams and passion,, did he mean Boman's transition from a successful photographer to a fantastic actor? We wonder. You hate Boman Irani's dangerous egotism but you cannot overlook his credibility as an actor of par excellence. His mannerisms and oddity add to the comic elements of this sizzling movie, where not a single moment seems dull.
The film is packed with good music - two songs particularly strike you - 'All Izz Well' and ' Give me some sunshine' .
In short, the film is amazing with equal dollops of comedy and suspense. Lastly, how can we forget Chatur, his hilarious speech and his strange and accented Hindi? So, I would like to draw a close with Chatur's hilarious speech (edited to some extent for decency purpose).
Enjoy and do not forget the mantra of the movie - All Iz Well...
